Anne Arundel Community College, 2018
Recently ranked the number one community college in the country by Academic Influence, the Anne Arundel Community College’s (AACC) picturesque 230-acre campus sits right outside Annapolis, Maryland. AACC wanted to improve navigational efficiency and visitor accessibility for vehicles and pedestrians across the campus. We worked with AACC to overhaul the signage system and create a comprehensive wayfinding strategy that included hierarchy and messaging recommendations to improve signage readability on campus.
Primary directional signs were reimagined to communicate three distinct messaging types: parking lots, building locations, and campus exit information. Building abbreviations used by students and staff were noted underneath building names in bright contrasting colors on all sign types, making it easy to locate destinations. A comprehensive design guideline document introduced new typographic style recommendations and an innovative approach to color, which dramatically improved the system’s readability.

We developed an alphanumeric grid system to locate the 150+ signs on the 230-acre campus to ensure accurate sign placement and clear communication between the client and the installation team.

To improve the functionality of the wayfinding system, we simplified and redrew the campus map highlighted on signage across the campus.
