“Seasons of Flight” at BWI

Creating a monument to movement

In fall 1993, Graham Landscape invited David Ashton to help reimagine a welcoming landmark for visitors to the Baltimore–D.C. region. Commissioned by the Maryland Aviation Administration during BWI’s main terminal renovation, the aim was to create a garden that served as a symbol of place. Ashton’s contribution to the project was equal parts ethereal literal: a flock of 150 steel geese, suspended in perpetual flight.

Crafted from Corten steel by a skilled blacksmith, each folded sculpture is mounted on slender rods to create the illusion of birds in flight.

“This is a fragment of the Maryland landscape. It’s meant to set a tone for visitors from out of state and let them know what this region is about. It's supposed to have a strong regional character — mid-Atlantic, Chesapeake Bay, tidewater — so people will know they’re in Maryland and not in the West somewhere.”
