Ed Smith Stadium
Playful touches to watch the Orioles play ball
A Sarasota institution since 1989, Ed Smith Stadium embodies a true sense of Americana. Still, when the Orioles made it their spring training home in 2010, the facilities required a major overhaul to match the spirit of the space. We crafted a thorough signage and wayfinding package as part of a $31 million renovation to breathe life back into the stadium.
Ed Smith Stadium was considered a cold, run-down facility with Brutalist-style architecture when the Orioles moved in. To create “Birdland South,” we leaned into signage that felt like home to the Orioles but still embraced Sarasota’s signature sensibility. Orange was our uniting ticket in.
We created visual ties to Camden Yards by incorporating key details from Ashton’s original design, like the green ivy gates, metal seating details, and hallmark “Orioles” type across the scoreboard.
We ultimately touched every sign and graphic in the stadium, covering the main field experience, three practice fields, indoor batting cages, bullpens, umpire rooms, concession services, and more.
In the end, between Ed Smith Stadium and the Buck O’Neil Baseball Complex down the road, we created, produced, and applied over 1,000 Orioles-based, Florida-friendly designs.
