FDNY Fire Zone
FDNY Foundation, 2020
The FDNY Fire Zone is a fire safety learning center in midtown Manhattan. Located in Rockefeller Center, the facility gives visitors a look into the world’s second-largest municipal fire department. Hands-on exhibits and dynamic presentations educate guests about fire emergencies and provide life-saving lessons. We worked with the FDNY Foundation and multimedia production company batwin + robin to develop the spatial plans and programming for the visitor experience. We also designed the exhibit displays, graphics, and signage.

More than 2,500 fire department patches from around the world are on display at FDNY Fire Zone.

An 18-foot-tall map locates every firehouse in New York City using the unique patch from each engine and ladder company.

Simulating real-life fire emergencies, an immersive theater experience uses realistic scenic designs with 3D projection-mapping, audio, and lighting effects.

Guests exit the theater through a dark, smoke-filled corridor. Photoluminescent floor lettering reminds them to “Stay low and go!”
