Mill No. 1
Polishing an antique gem for a new generation
Mill No. 1 is an adaptive reuse of a 19th-century cotton mill located along the Jones Falls in Baltimore. Inspired by the abundant character of the historic buildings, we created an identity and site signage for the mixed-use space that mimic and complement the industrial features of the site.
We didn’t have to stray far from the mill’s core aesthetics when creating the updated identity. Both the iconic illuminated rooftop sign and the hand-painted identity on the main chimney stack are modernized takes on the site’s original signage, which helps create a seamless, visual harmony between new elements and old.
Throughout the site, we preserved the original signage to maintain authenticity, adding updated elements only where needed to signal access to modern amenities.
