PBS Headquarters

OTJ Architects, 2020

Ashton Design created the environmental graphics and recognition signage for the new PBS Headquarters in Crystal City. The team was asked to create architecturally integrated graphics within the welcoming/lobby area to showcase the full reach and breadth of public broadcasting in the United States as well as to honor/recognize PBS member stations, foundation donors, and the foundation board.

Multiple recognition areas throughout the space utilize a range of fabrication methods and materials. Dimensional letters, etched and paint-filled panels, and laser engraved wood were coordinated to match the architectural finishes.

All of the graphic panels were designed with a unique blind z-clip attachment detail. As the recognition expands and changes in the future, entire wall layouts can be rearranged without damaging the architectural finishes.

The United States map is rendered in blue lacquered wood with a customized CNC grid pattern that allows for the more than 150 member stations to be accurately plotted across the 10 ft wide map. The entire installation is easily updatable as new stations are added.
