The Monkton Hotel
Scenic and steeped in history
Initially built as a railway stopover in 1858, the Monkton Hotel has a long history of welcoming guests, from Civil War soldiers to current city escapees. Ashton drew on this rich history to craft a brand identity that captured the hotel’s unique sense of place while moving its legacy forward.
For nearly two centuries, The Monkton Hotel has served as a rural retreat for visitors passing through. As a common stopover on the railway between York, PA and Baltimore, MD, the hotel has been associated with both the rise of industry and the restorative power of nature.
The logo was designed with this tension in mind. Elegant type faces lend a worldly sensibility, while the interlocking monogram roots the brand in a bygone era. Railroad-inspired details round out the visual brand language; here, abstracted industrial artifacts create sophisticated patterns built to appeal to a modern audience.
A simple, striking icon system was developed to complement and convey the rich range of activities available to guests on the property.
Thanks to its bucolic and strategic location, The Monkton Hotel attracts visitors of all types, not just overnight guests. To better communicate with them, we created a supplementary indentity system that allows the hotel to continue to diversify its offerings and still ensure a cohesive, branded experience.
