Creating a cohesive campus experience

Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) is fortunate to call 230 acres near Annapolis, Maryland home. Students and guests, however, were having trouble navigating the park-like site. We helped AACC improve its visitor experience by overhauling its signage system, implementing a comprehensive wayfinding strategy, and increasing sign readability across the campus. 

Recently ranked the number one community college in the country by Academic Influence, AACC deserved a signage system that matched the quality of experience the school delivers. 

To get started, we applied an alphanumeric grid to the campus and plotted over 150 signs across it. This ensured accurate sign placement and ultimately helped AACC maintain clear communication with its installation team.

Primary directional signs were grouped into three distinct types: parking lots, building locations, and campus exit information. 

On all signs, common abbreviations used by students and staff were noted under building names in bright, contrasting colors. Simplifying and redrawing the campus map also helped improve navigation.

This new approach to type, color, and graphics dramatically improved each sign’s readability. We created comprehensive guidelines outlining the system so AACC could make future decisions that delivered the same results.  

A new monument sign at the entryway helped cement a sense of place and a sense of pride—it’s become a favorite place for recent graduates to pose for photos.
